On the Dunkirk Memorial is the name of 2649264 Lance Serjeant Hoodless Robinson, serving with the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 17/04/1945.

Bill Watson has submitted the following:

The above soldier is mentioned on both the Dinnington and the Seaton Burn memorials. The reason he is on Dinnington memorial is the family lived in Hazlerigg at the time of his death and in the Ecclesiastical Parish of St. Matthew, Dinnington. However I can give you some information of Sgt. Robinson. He had evaded capture after the Dunkirk evacuation, his family learned of this in 1945 when someone in France wrote to his home address asking how he was, it seems he was hidden by this person. He eventually was captured and was held in various POW camps ending up in Stalag Luft 3. He was on a march westwards from Sagan when he dropped out of the march to give assistance to a fellow prisoner when he was shot by one of the guards. This would be somewhere in Germany, but having no known grave he is mentioned on the Dunkirk memorial. This information was provided to me by his son Christopher when I was researching the Dinnington memorial. Regards. Bill Watson.

I stumbled across your website while searching on the web while looking for more information on L.Sgt Robinson. As far as I know, he is listed on the Dunkirk memorial as deceased, body not located. To make a long story short, I know where he is buried. I visited the spot last fall to get pictures. He is buried in a mass grave in the city cemetery of Greiz, Thüringen in Germany. The mass grave was for Hungarian soldiers who died in a nearby field hospital, I assume he was treated there before he died. The people I took the photos for have informed me that this information has already been handed over to CWGC and MOD. Just thought you would also like to have this information for your archives. If I can help out in any way or if you have any questions feel free to contact me anytime.
Have a good day,
Chris Thomas

On the attached photos taken in the cemetery at Greiz, L/Sgt's Robinson's name is at the bottom on the left hand side.

Hoodless Robinson is remembered in Longbenton on L25.10 in Dinnington on D10.02 and in Seaton Burn S88.01
