Memorial Description

Monument, tall four-square with columns at the corners, total height 20 feet. At the top is a domed column surmounted by a cross. The whole is on a base of three steps and set in a railed enclosure. The columns and domes top are of red polished granite. The faces on which are the names are of red polished granite, two on each side, one above the other. Lettering is incised and gilded using sans serif capitals throughout.

Notes

1. From Seaton Burn, 399 had joined up; 49 had died. 108 putters had also gone, of whom 20 had been killed,

2. A Welcome Home Fund had raised £758, £433 from colliery levies; £294 by public subscription. £118 had been paid out in death legacies; £311 hand been handed out of men on leave. The balance of £200 would go towards the memorial.

3. Incessant rain on the day of the unveiling resulting in curtailment of the outdoor events and moving indoors to the Co-operative Hall.

4. The railings were being maintained in October 2012 by Cadets of 861 (Wideopen) Air Training Corps. See links below.
