L'Argent, J.G., Sgt., 1943
In Bergen General Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1562678 Sergeant John George L'Argent, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 04/12/1943.

He was the son of John George and Mary L'Argent, of Shiremoor, Northumberland.

No 431(B) Squadron Code : SE Canadian. Based at Tholthope and converted from Wellington to B Mk V Halifaxes in July 1943. Moved to Croft in December and began converting to B Mk IIIs in March 1944. Began converting to Lancasters in October. Last Halifax operational mission on the 25th October 1944.

This Halifax was from a batch of 100 aircraft, Rootes Securities Ltd, Contract No ACFT/637, requisition HA3/E11/40. Deliveries commenced April 1943 (EB127). B Mk V EB127-160, EB178-22-, EB239-258, EB274-276.

Flight Sgt. Steven was killed when Handley Page Halifax V EB137 SE-N of 431 (R.C.A.F.) Squadron was lost on a mission to Leipzig, with the loss of all seven crew members.

Halifax EB137 SE-N had departed Tholthorpe at 2339 for Ops Leipzig

It was intercepted at 4500M by a Night-Fighter captained by Fw Karl-Georg Pfeiffer (XII/NJG1) and shot down at 0303 for his 9th Abschuss
