In Tynemouth (Preston) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Master Peter Kemp Ross, serving with the Mercantile Marine who died 18/09/1918.

The headstone reads:

Sacred
and
loving
memory
of
Peter Kemp,
beloved husband of
Susannah Ross
killed at sea by enemy action
Sept. 18th 1918, aged 50 years
Also Harry Lamond Ross,
darling only son of the above
lost at sea by enemy action
Aug. 24th 1917, aged 15 years
The above Susannah

He was Initiated into 240 St Hilda’s Lodge Freemasons Hall, South Shields on the 10th July 1905; Passed 11th September 1905 and Raised on the 9th October 1905.

He was the husband of Susannah Ross of 26 Tynedale Avenue, Monkseaton. He died on the 18th September 1918 aged 50 and is buried at Tynemouth (Preston) Cemetery, Northumberland Grave Reference C.C.10330

Editor’s Note

The SS John O’Scott (1235 GRT) of Leith owned by Christian Salvesen was defensively armed. She was torpedoed without warning by the German submarine U117 on a voyage from Barry to Dover on the 18th September 1918 nine miles W by N from Trevose Head with the loss of 18 lives.

His son Harry Lamond Ross was killed in 1917.
