Cruickshanks, W.A., Pt/Off., 1942

In Tynemouth (Preston) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 126086 Pilot Officer (Wireless Op./Air Gunner) William Allen Cruickshanks serving with the 224 Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 30/10/1942.

The headstone reads:

In loving memory of our only son
Pilot Officer Alan Cruickshanks
No. 224 Squadron R.A.F.
killed in action
October 30th 1942, aged 23 years
also William A. Cruickshanks
father of the above
died January 4th 1963, aged 77 years.
also his dear wife
Elizabeth Amy
died ...............?1965 aged 75

224 Squadron was part of Coastal Command in 1939-45. In 1942 the pilots flew Liberators against U-Boats.

He is remembered in North Shields on N34.10 and in Monkwearmouth in the RAF Roll of Honour book.

He is also listed in the Scout Roll of Honouras he had been a Ranger Scout at Tynemouth Y.M.C.A.
