In Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 18/937 Lance Corporal John William Ashton serving in 4th Platoon, 'A'Company, 18th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 07/09/1916.

John Walter Ashton was born in Richmond, North Yorkshire, on the 10th November 1882, to George and Margaret Ashton née Prest of Railway Cottage, Saint Martins, Richmond, Yorkshire. They were married in 1881.

John was a resident in New York Village, North Shields, when he joined the 18th Battalion (Pioneers) Northumberland Fusiliers, his service number was 18/937. He was boarding at 8 Mafeking Terrace, New York, Northumberland in 1911. He was a Grocers assistant at Harbottle's Grocery Store.

John was killed by a rock fall whilst tunnelling on the 7th September 1916.
