KILLINGWORTH and WEST MOOR

Hindmarsh, W., A/Smn., 1916
In Varennes Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of TZ/6248 Able Seaman William Hindmarsh, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 11/11/1916.

Colin Boyd has submitted the following:

William was born on 22nd October 1896 and was working as a miner living with his father, William at 51, Cross Row, West Moor, Forest Hall when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 14th August 1915.

He qualified as a machine gunner and joined the Anson Battalion on 25th February 1916. William was wounded in France on 9th November 1916 and died of wounds in the 4th Casualty Clearing Station on the same day. The wounds were a gas shell wound to the left foot and a fractured femur.

William Hindmarsh is remembered in Killingworth on K9.01, K9.03 and K9.04 page 11
