Douglas, M., A/Smn., 1916
In Contay British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of Tyneside Z/4614 Able Seaman Mathew Douglas, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 16/11/1916.

Colin Boyd has submitted the following:

Matthew was born on 22nd November 1897 and was working as a miner living with his parents Matthew and Isabella at 4, Middle Row, Bates Cottages, Seaton Delaval when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 22nd May 1915, just two weeks after his brother William's death in Gallipoli.

Matthew was posted to the Drake Battalion on 21st September 1915 and was hospitalised with Dysentery on 6th November 1915. He joined the Howe Battalion on 23rd December 1915 and died from the effects of a gun shot wound to the right leg at 9th Casualty Clearing Station in France on 16th November 1916.
