On Tyne Cot Memorial is the name of 35222 Lance Serjeant William Henry Charlton serving with the 12/13th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 04/10/1917.

Wilfred Henry Charlton was the son of Stephen and Jane (nee Hogg) Charlton. He was born at Acomb 18th February 1887. Stephen was a Cartman in 1881 at Acomb, an Agricultural Labourer in 1891 at Keepershield, Haughton, a cattleman at Plain Trees Farm Cottage, Wall in 1901 and by 1911 a retired Farm Houseman living at Linden Terrace Humshaugh. Stephen and Jane had been married 32 years they had 13 children 9 of whom were still living.

Wilfred in 1901 was an apprentice gardener and by 1911 aged 24 is a domestic gardener.

At the out break of war Wilfred enlisted at Hexham firstly into the 1/4th Northumberland Fusiliers - service number 4/1794 and became a corporal. He went to France 20th April 1915. At some point he transferred the 12/13th and became a Lance Sergeant.

The Hexham Courant 07/10/1916 reads:-

Mr and Mrs Stephen Charlton Humshaugh received information that their son Wilfred was seriously wounded on September 15th (1916). Before the war broke out he was employed as a gardener by the Misses Cruddas Haughton Castle.

A year later Wilfred was reported missing in France on 4th October 1917 and in October 1918 his parents were told he was presumed killed on that date. Wilfred has no known grave. He is listed on the Tyne Cot Memorial.

Wilfred is remembered at Humshaugh on H81.01, H81.02 and H81.03
