Notes

1. Among initial proposals for a memorial were:
- a village hall;
- a bed in Newcastle General Hospital;
- cottages for discharged soldiers; a cross;
- a cross and Victory Hall; (the Newcastle Daily Journal reports that the rest of the memorial is to be a Victory Hall).

2. Road improvements demanded the move to another site, but this was objected to and not carried out.

3. When requested by the British Legion to add two names to the memorial for 1939-45, the Parish Council replied that they had no powers to incur the expense, and suggested trying the Trustees of the Comforts Fund.

4. In 1914-18, from a population of 625 in the parish, 105 served, 15 were killed.

5. This was the last military act by Major-Gen. Sir R.A, Kerr-Montgomery prior to relinquishing the command of the Tyne Garrison.

6. The original location was to have been at the junction of three roads in the centre of the village, but difficulties led to the abandonment of this idea.
