In Hexham (St. Andrew’s) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 85598 Private George Basil Porteous serving with the Royal Defence Corps, who died 01/02/1920.

The family headstone reads:

In loving memory of
Anthony Thompson
of Lincoln Cottage, Hexham,
who died April 21st 1904,
in his 78th year.
also Isabella,
beloved wife of the above
who died 6th April 1919,
aged 88 years.
and George Basil,
beloved husband of
Cecilia Porteous,
third son of George and Isabella Porteous
and great nephew of the above,
Anthony & Isabella Thompson,
who died 1st Feb.1920,
aged 36 years.

George Basil was born in the second quarter of 1883, the third son George and Isabella Porteous Harrison of Deneholme, Hexham, and husband of Cecilia, 13 St. Wilfred’s Road, Hexham.

George had previously served as Private 44249 with the 2nd Battalion, South Wales Borderers, but received shrapnel wounds to his back during active service in France; April 1917 and was invalided to England the following month.
