Smith, R., Capt., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of Captain Raymond Smith, serving with the Border Regiment, who died 01/07/1916.

Percy Lodge No.1427; Year of Warrant 1873; Masonic Hall Maple Street Newcastle on Tyne;
Captain Raymond Smith; Border Regiment 11th Battalion.

The son of Mr. F.P. Smith of Haltwhistle, Northumberland he was a Varnish Manufacturer of Greystones, Haltwhistle. He was Initiated on the 18th November 1913 aged 24; Passed 16th December 1913 and Raised into Delaval Lodge No 2568, Newcastle on Tyne on the 12th February 1914. He was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on the 1st July 1916 aged 27 and is Remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, Pier and Face 6 A and 7 C.

Raymond Smith is remembered in Haltwhistle on H5.01 and H5.06
