Medal Card

Tyneside Scottish

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 22/675 Private John Thomas Wright serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 22nd Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

John Thomas Wright was born at Cambois, Northumberland in 1895 to parents John Wright from Norfolk and Francis Wright (nee Carr) from Bedlington.

In 1901 John was six years old and living at 54, South Row, West Sleekburn, Northumberland, with his parents and siblings Sarah 3 and William aged 1. His father was a hewer in the coal mines.

The 1911 Census records John living at 56, North Row, West Sleekburn, aged 16 and working as a shaft keeper underground. Additional siblings in the family home were Elizabeth, 8 and Joseph, aged 3.

Military documents confirm that John enlisted at Blyth, and on his death his effects, in 1917 and 1919, went to his father John, indicating that he was unlikely to have been married. His Pension Index Card shows only his mother Francis Wright.

John Thomas Wright is remembered in West Sleekburn on W34.01 and W34.02
