Andrews, S.M., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 15818 Private Shadrick McGregor Andrews of the Princess of Wales Own Yorkshire Regiment, the Green Howards who died 01/07/1916.

Susan Carmichael has provided the following;

Shadrick was the son of James Andrews of Edinburgh, and Ann Elizabeth Andrews (nee McGregor), of Heaton, Newcastle.

James and Ann were married in the first quarter of 1891. Before his marriage James was a lodger at the home of Robert and Dorothy Richardson, and their young daughter Margaret, in Bedlington, Northumberland. He was working as a coal miner, hewer. Ann was a domestic servant at a house in Percy Park, Tynemouth.

By the 1901 census the family lived at 20, Port Street, Hirst, Ashington. The family now had four sons.

The 1911 census shows the family had moved to 27, East Terrace, Stakeford, Choppington, Bedlington. The family now had a daughter, as well as the sons. Shadrick was working as a pony driver underground in the mine.

Shadrick McGregor Andrews is remembered in Stakeford on S71.02 and in Bedlington on B15.06
