Lawson, J.J.W., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 20/1317 Private John James Watson Lawson, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 20th Battalion, who died 01/07/1916.

Susan Carmichael has provided the following:

John James Watson Lawson was born in Green Bank, Cockermouth, in 1877, the son of Joseph Faulder Lawson, born at Drumburgh, Cumberland, and Margaret Watson Lawson (nee Holliday), born in Birkenhead, Cheshire. Joseph and Margaret were married in Wigton, Cumberland.

The census of 1881 records John as living with his parents, and Isabella Kay, a general servant, at Green Bank, Cockermouth, Cumberland. His father is a farmer with 100 acres.

In the 1891 census John is recorded as living at Market Place, Cockermouth, along with his parents, brothers Joseph F., 8, Robert, 7, Frank, 5, and his sister Margaret Elizabeth, 2. Also living with the family is Jane Bateman, a 16 year old servant.John’s father is still recorded as being a farmer.

There is no record of John in either the 1901 or 1911 census.

In 1913 John married Edith Whinham, and had three children, Faulder in 1913 in Cockermouth, James in 1914, also in Cockermouth, and in 1915 Winifred M in Morpeth.

John James Watson Lawson enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers in Bedlington. At the time of his enlistment he was living at 10, Thornley Terrace, Bedlington.

John James Watson Lawson is remembered in Bedlington on B15.06, in Choppington on C36.01 and in Stakeford on S71.02
