Lowery, J.G., Pte., 1915
On the Helles Memorial is the name of 4883 Private John George Lowery, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 28/08/1915.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

Birth records for John George Lowery show he was born in 1889 (Q4) and was this was registered at Morpeth, Northumberland. Other records, including military, show the following as his place of birth as Newbiggin, Bedlington and Red Row, all in Northumberland and relatively close to each other.

His parents were Benjamin and Dorothy (nee Taylor) Lowery. His father was a hewer in the coal mines, born at Hetton in County Durham, and his mother was born at Earsdon, Northumberland.

The 1891 Census shows John George Lowery to be less than 2 years old, living with his family at 9th Row, Ashington. In the house at this time are brothers Adam and Thomas.

In 1901, the Lowery family lived at Long Row, Ashington where John was 11 years old with siblings Thomas 10, Ellen 8, Dorothy 6, Benjamin 3, Jane Ann 2 and Robert who was not yet one year old.

By 1911 the Lowery family has increased in size and there were 15 people living in 4 rooms at 52, North Row, West Sleekburn, a village near to Bedlington. John at this time was single, aged 22 and working in the coal mines as a hewer. John had 6 brothers and 6 sisters.

In 1913, John married Emma Graham and they had two daughters: Emma G. born in 1913 and Doris who was born in 1915.

Military information shows he was born at Newbiggin, enlisted at Ashington and died as a result of his wounds. CWGC records indicate his parents were living at 17, Oswald Road, Newbiggin after 1911 and his widow lived at Prudhoe Cottages, Newbiggin after her husband’s death.
