On the Helles Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/1240 Leading Seaman Thomas Nichols, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 24/12/1915.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Thomas was born on 23rd September 1895. He was working as a miner living with his father, Henry at 13, Allan Road, Newbiggin by the Sea when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 7th November 1914. His next of kin was later changed to Mrs. Mary Ann Nichols of Newton, Ipswich, Queensland, Australia.

He joined the Hawke Battalion on 22nd February 1915 and was hospitalised on 20th June 1915 suffering from gun shot wounds to the chest and buttock.

Thomas rejoined the Hawke Battalion on 4th September 1915 and was killed in action in Gallipoli on 24th December 1915.

Thomas Nichol is remembered in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea on N10.03 N10.06 and N10.14
