Friberg, H., A/Smn., 1918
On Vis-en-Artois Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/1199 Able Seaman Henry Friberg, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 02/09/1918.

Colin Boyd has submitted the following:

Henry was born on 12th April 1896 and was working as a miner living with his parents, William and Isabella at 11, Emmerson Road, Newbiggin-by-the Sea when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 6th November 1914.

He joined "A" Company of the Hawke Battalion on 3rd May 1915 and was hospitalised with a knee injury on 17th July 1915. Henry rejoined the Hawke Battalion on 4th October 1915 only to be hospitalised again suffering from Vertigo.

He rejoined the Battalion on 7th February 1916 and was invalided to the UK with a leg injury on 11th April 1917. After rejoining the Hawke Battalion Henry was hospitalised again on 21st February 1918 with injuries to a foot and his back.

Henry rejoined the Battalion on 6th April 1918 and served only until 11th April 1918 when he was hospitalised for the fifth time with injuries to his right buttock.

After rejoining on 27th May 1918 Henry was posted as killed in action in France on 2nd September.

When Henry's medals were forwarded his parents were living in New South Wales, Australia.

Henry Friberg is remembered in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea on N10.06 and N10.14
