Barber, T., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France is the name of 12797 Private Thomas Barber, serving with 8th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 27/09/1916.

Thomas, born in 1893 at Heddon on the Wall was the son of Robert and Jane Isabella Barber. In 1901 they were living at Marshes Houses West Sleekburn. In 1911 they were at 19 Institute Row West Sleekburn. Thomas, like his father was a miner. At some point the family moved to 20 Oswald Road, Newbiggin by the Sea.

Thomas enlisted at Ashington and joined the Northumberland Fusiliers. He embarked for the Balkans 19th July 1915.

He was killed 27th September 1916 and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 10B,11B and 12B.

He was the recipient of the 1915 Star, the British Empire Medal and the Victory Medal.

He was the cousin of William Wood who died at the Barber home 20 Oswald Road Newbiggin-by-the-Sea in 1919.
