Bennett, A., Pte., 1917
In Bailleul Road East Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 16420 Private of Alexander Bennett serving with 21st (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 09/04/1917.

Margaret Burgess has submitted the following:-

Alexander born in 1887 at Gosforth was the son of James and Hannah Bennett. In 1901 and 1911 the family were living at 1 Long Row Cramlington. James and his sons were miners. Later James and Hannah moved to 15 Oswald Road, Newbiggin-by- the-Sea.

Alexander enlisted at Newcastle upon Tyne and joined the Northumberland Fusiliers. He embarked for France 7th October 1915. He was killed in action at the age of 31 in April 1917.

He was the recipient of the 2925 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Alexander Bennett is remembered at Newbiggin by the Sea on N10.06 and N10.14
