Armstrong, Jos., Pte., 1915
On Ypres Menin Gate Memorial is the name of 2234 Private Joseph Armstrong, serving with the 1st/7th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 07/05/1915.

Margaret Burgess has submitted the following:-

Joseph Robert was born in 1889 in Newbiggin by the Sea, the son of John and Elizabeth Armstrong. His birth records are the only time he is named as Joseph Robert.

In 1891 the family were living at Front Street, Newbiggin by the Sea and John Armstrong was a tailor. In 1911 the family were at 1 Wandsworth Terrace, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. John is an unemployed tailor and his sons Stanley and Joseph are miners.

Joseph enlisted at Alnwick into the Northumberland Fusiliers and went to France 21st April 1915. He was presumed killed 7th May 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial Panel 8 and 12.

Recipient of the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Joseph Armstrong is remembered in Newbiggin by the Sea on N10.06 and N10.14
