Armstrong, R., L/Smn., 1916
In Ancre British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of Z/1780 Leading Seaman Robert Armstrong, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 13/11/1916.

Colin Boyd had submitted the following:

Robert was born on 22nd May 1894 and was working as a miner and a fisherman living with his mother, Maggie, at 3, Downies Buildings, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 12th November 1914.

He served with the Hood Battalion until 14th August 1915 when he was hospitalised with enteritis and invalided back to the UK on 3rd September 1915. He rejoined the Hood Battalion and served until 4th November 1916 when he was admitted to hospital with pyrexia. He was discharged to the Hood Battalion on 8th November 1916 and was killed in action five days later.

Robert was buried in Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont Hamel, in CWG grave ref. 111.A.30.[Note: although his Next of Kin is shown as mother, Maggie, his medals are shown as being forwarded to his father-in-law which would indicate that Robert had married at some time between 12/11/1914 and 13/11/1916.

Robert Armstrong is remembered in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea on N10.06 and N10.14, but there is more than one "R. Armstrong" from the village, so it is not clear whose name is shown.
