In St. Bartholomew's church yard is a headstone which reads:-

Margaret Burgess has submitted the following:-
Edward, born 8th of August 1892 in Coxhoe, Durham, was the son of John and Eliza Jane Hughes who were living at 2 Oswald Road, Newbiggin by the Sea at the time of his death.
He was a miner before he enlisted.
Edward was injured in 1915 but was transferred from Collingwood Battalion to Nelson Battalion and was serving with Nelson when he was killed in 1916.
Recipient of the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
An earlier photo on file shows a much older headstone of which only the lower portion is legible :-
