In Ville-Sur-Ancre Communal Cemetery, Somme, France is the Commonwealth War Grave of 14545 Private James Herbert Punton, serving with the 13th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 24/06/1916.

Margaret Burgess has submitted the following:-

James born in 1896 at Gateshead was the son of James and Annie Punton. In 1911 the family were living at Gallowgate Newcastle upon Tyne and James was an errand boy. The family moved at some point to 9 Emerson Road, Newbiggin by the Sea.

James enlisted at Ashington and joined the Northumberland Fusiliers. He embarked for France 28th July 1915.

He died of wounds aged 21 years 24th June 1916 and is buried at Ville-Sur-Ancre Communal Cemetery.

Recipient of the 1915 Star the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

James Herbert Punton is remembered in Newbiggin by the Sea on N10.03, N10.06 and N10.14
