Brown, W., Pte., 1916

Berwickshire News 24/10/1916

In Dartmoor Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt is the Commonwealth War Grave of 2250 Private Walter Brown, serving with the 1st 7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 17/09/1916.

Margaret Burgess has submitted the following:-

Walter born 1895 was the son of George William and Martha Brown of 11 Simonside Terrace, Newbiggin by the Sea. In 1911 he was a Grocer's Apprentice probably at Newbiggin by the Sea Cooperative Store.

He enlisted at Alnwick and joined the Northumberland Fusiliers possibly with George Curtis – service number 2236. He embarked for France 21 April 1915 and died 17th September 1916.

Recipient of the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Morpeth Herald 20/10/1916 carries a brief obituary:

Private Walter Brown, 11 Simonside Terrace, Newbiggin, has died of wounds.

The Morpeth Herald 29/12/1916 gives a report from Newbiggin District Industrial and Providential Society – Forty employees had left to serve with His Majesty's Forces and the committee regretted to state that two had lost their lives – George Curtis and Walter Brown and several had been wounded.

Walter Brown is remembered in Newbiggin by the Sea on N10.03 N10.06 N10.08 N10.09 and in the Battalion History
