In the Churchyard of St Bartholomew, Newbiggin by the Sea is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of LT/JX 242797 Ordinary Seaman David Morrison Gibbons serving with the H.M. Patrol Vessel Esther, Royal Naval Patrol Service who died 27/08/1941.

The headstone reads:-

In loving memory of
George N. Gibbons
who died Feb. 7th 1940 in his 22nd years
Also David M. Gibbons M.N.
who died Aug. 27th 1941 in his 21st year
The beloved sons of David and Olivia Gibbons
Also Margaret
dear daughter of the above
died Sept. 22nd 1943 aged 30 years
Also the above Olivia
Died April 30th 1969 aged 77 years
