Todd, B., Sgt., 1943

In St. Bartholomew's Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 1135127 Sergeant Brian Todd, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 24/08/1943.

The headstone reads:-

In Glorious Memory of
Brian
Segt. W/O. R.A.F. Coastal Command
Much loved son of Thomas and Janet Todd
Killed on Flying Operations Augt. 24th 1943
in his 21st year
Also the above Thomas Todd
who died Sept. 27th 1959 aged 78 years
Also Janet beloved wife of the above
who died Aug. 29th 1961 aged 72 years.

Sgt. Todd was a crew member in Vickers Wellington XII MP624 'B' which crashed at Higher Clovelly, when all were killed. A memorial was to be erected in Cornwall in late 1993. News Post Leader 8/7/93

172 Squadron was an anti-submarine squadron, operating from 1942, with powerful Leigh lights which lit up the sea below. The losses from the Squadron were many.
