In Achiet-le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France is the Commonwealth War Grave of Z/2796 Able Seaman Henry Brown serving with the Anson Battalion Royal Naval Division, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, who died 21/08/1918.

In St. Bartholomew's Churchyard is a family headstone which reads:-In loving memory of
Henry
dearly beloved husband of
Mary Isabella Brown
who departed this life on
Nov. 20th 1931 aged 90 years
Also Henry son of the above
Killed in Action in France
Aug. 21st 1918 aged 23 years
The above
Mary Isabella Brown
Died May 3rd 1932
Aged 78 years

The Illustrated Chronicle 17/01/1919 carried the following appeal for information:
Could any returned prisoner or others give any information as to what happened to A.B. (H.G.) Henry Brown, Z/2796T., D. Coy., 13th Platoon, Anson Battalion, Royal Naval Division, B.E.F., France, who was reported wounded and missing on Aug. 21, 1918? Any information would be gratefully received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Brown, of South View, Newbiggin-by-Sea.

Colin Boyd has submitted the following:

Henry was born on 27th October 1891 and was working as a miner living with his parents at Vernon Place, South View, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 2nd January 1915. He served with B company of the Howe Battalion until he was invalided to the UK on 3rd September 1915 suffering from pyrexia.

He joined the Anson Battalion in France on 26th November 1916 and was invalided to the UK again, suffering from a gun shot wound to the thigh.

Henry rejoined the Anson Battalion on 24th June 1917 and was hospitalised again with an ulcer on the right leg on 12th April 1918.

After rejoining on 26th May 1918 Henry was posted as wounded and missing assumed killed in action on 21st August 1918. His body was recovered post war.

Henry Brown is remembered at Newbiggin by the Sea on N10.06 and N10.14
