Patterson, J., A/Smn., 1918
On the Arras Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/1258 Able Seaman James Patterson, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 25/03/1918.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

James was born on July 13th 1883. He was working as a miner living with his father, John at 17½ Portia Street, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on November 6th 1914.

He joined the Hawke Battalion on April 3rd 1915 and served until August 24th 1915 when he was hospitalised with Dysentery.

James rejoined the Hawke Battalion on February 1916 and he was invalided to the UK on May 11th 1916 suffering from defective teeth and Pyrexia.

After joining the Howe Battalion in France on December 12th 1916 James was hospitalised with a gun shot wound to the left hand.

He rejoined the Howe Battalion on March 10th 1917 and after transferring to the Anson Battalion on February 7th 1918 James was killed in action on March 25th 1918.

James Patterson is remembered in Ashington on A17.01 (A17.27) and A17.43
