In St. John's Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Tyneside Z/9065 Able Seaman Sampson Main, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 06/03/1919.

The headstone reads:

Memory of
Sampson
Beloved son of
Sampson and
Isabella Main,
Died at Granton
Naval Hospital
Edinburgh, March 6th
1919, aged
28 years.

Margaret Allison reports that in 1911 his address was 40 Rosalind Street, Ashington.
