Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

Joseph Hornsby was born at Blyth in Northumberland about 1892. His parents were Joseph Hornsby, born at Willington, Durham and Mary Hornsby from Gloucestershire.

In 1901 his family, which included siblings George 15, Martha 13, Lillian 11, Mary 6, Grace 4 and Samuel aged 1, lived at Double Row Newsham, near to Blyth, in Northumberland. Joseph was nine years old at this time.

The 1911 Census shows his family had moved to 53, Bowes Street, Blyth where his father and Joseph, now aged 19, were employed in the coal mines as hewers. The only other siblings in the household were Mary, Grace and Samuel.

Military records show Joseph enlisted at Blyth. The Ireland, Casualties of World War 1, 1914-1922 records he was killed in action. His effects went to his father indicating he was not married.

His younger brother Samuel enlisted in the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and died in 1918 aged 18.

Joseph Hornsby is remembered in Cambois on C6.02
