On the Tyne Cot Memorial is the name of 39329 Private Samuel Hornsby, serving with the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (9th Battalion) who died 24/04/1918.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

Census reports show his full name was Samuel Arnott Hornsby and he was born at Blyth in Northumberland about 1900. His parents were Joseph Hornsby, a coal miner born at Willington, Durham and Mary Hornsby from Gloucestershire. In 1901, his family, which included siblings George 15, Martha 13, Lillian 11, Joseph 9, Mary 6, and Grace 4, lived at Double Row Newsham, near to Blyth, in Northumberland.

The 1911 Census shows his family had moved to 53, Bowes Street, Blyth where Samuel, now aged 11, was still at school. The other siblings in the household were Mary, Grace and Joseph.

CWGC information shows he was the son of Joseph and Mary Hornsby of 19, Boathouse Terrace Cambois and would probably have lived there when he enlisted at Blyth.

Military information shows he was formerly 90036 in T. R. Battalion and his effects went to his mother Mary indicating he was not married.

His older brother Joseph enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Irish) and died 09/04/1917.

Samuel Arnott Hornsby is remembered in Cambois on C6.02
