On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 23/713 Private John Dunn, serving with Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 23rd Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

John Dunn was born at Bamburgh in Northumberland in 1877 to parents John Dunn from Chatton, Northumberland and Jane Dunn (nee Carston) from Ancroft in the same county. When John was 14, in 1891, he was living with his parents at Etal Rhodes, Ford, Northumberland where his father was a farm servant.

In 1901 John, aged 24, is shown as single and employed as a farm worker living at Cheswick Buildings Farm House, Ancroft in his father’s house. Also in the house was his brother George, aged 16, and his sister Elizabeth.

The 1911 Census records John married living at Windmill, Shoreswood, Norham, Berwick with four children working as a stone cracker supplying stones for road making. John was 24 and married to Mary (nee Weddell) from Berwick. Children in the house at this time were John 6, Thomas 4, William 2 and Johanna aged 1.

Military records show that John enlisted at Bedlington and on his death his effects went to Mary who was still shown as a widow in September 1919.

His Pension Index Card shows his widow Mary and four children: John Weddell, Thomas Alexander, Johanna and Jane.

John Dunn is remembered in Choppington on C36.01 and in Stakeford on S71.02

His name is also in Ashington on A17.01 (A17.27) and A17.43
