BEDLINGTON STATION

Robson, W., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 23/589 Private William Robson serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following.

William was born in Bedlington in 1898, the son of William and Elleanor Robson. In 1901 the family was living at Bell's Place, Bedlington, and in 1911 they were living in Old Colliery Row, before moving to South Row and then North Row in Bedlington Station. William went to work at the pit with his father and in 1911 he was a pony driver. William enlisted in Newcastle into the 23rd Northumberland Fusiliers (4th Tyneside Scottish) and died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. His parents were told initially only that he was missing. The 'Blyth News' of 22/04/1917 records “Pte. W. Robson of 75, South Row, Bedlington Colliery, missing since July 1st 1916 is now reported killed on that date.”

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 and in Bedlington on B15.06 and B15.20
