BEDLINGTON STATION

Ramsey, G.W., A/Smn., 1916
In Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, is the Commonwealth War Grave of Tyneside Z/1555 Able Seaman George William Ramsey, serving with Anson Battalion, Royal Naval Division, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, who died 13/11/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following.

George was born 7th May 1894 at Bedlington Bank Top, the youngest of five surviving children to William and Sarah, and he became a pitman like his father. In the 1911 census his family is shown as living at 8, Howard Terrace, Bedlington Bank Top, and George was working as a coal putter. He joined the R.N.V.R. but as there were more sailors than ships he became part of Churchill's Royal Naval Division and always fought on land. He died in the Battle of the Ancre, the last big British attack of the Battle of the Somme, when the British finally captured Beaumont-Hamel at their third attempt.

George was born on may 7th 1894. He was working as a miner living with his father, William at 8, Howard Terrace, Bedlington Bank Top when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on November 14th 1914.

He joined the Anson Battalion on February 23rd 1915 and served until September 18th 1915 when he was hospitalised with Dysentery.

He was posted to the Hood Battalion on June 13th 1916 and rejoined the Anson Battalion on July 31st 1916. George was reported as missing later reported as being killed in action on November 13th 1916.

George William Ramey is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 and in Bedlington on B163.04 where his name is given as “Ramsay”.
