Chilton, R., L/Cpl., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 20/1241 Lance Corporal Robert Chilton, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Robert, known as Bob, was born in 1881 in Bedlington Station, the fourth child of Thomas and Ann Chilton, and he grew up to be a miner like the other men in his family. He married Isabel Walton in 1904 and they had three children, Thomas, John and Margaret.

He joined the Tyneside Scottish and was one of the many men of the Northumberland Fusiliers who died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. His body was never found and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 and in Bedlington on B15.06
