Carruthers, R.. Sjt., M.M., 1918
In Bellacourt Military Cemetery, Riviere is the Commonwealth War Grave of 23776 Serjeant Robert Carruthers M.M. serving with Royal Army Medical Corps who died 23/08/1918.

Robert was born in Bedlington in 1885, the eldest child of Joseph and Mary Carruthers, and Robert became a miner like his father. In 1906 he married Mary Tait and they had two children, George in 1907 and Henry in 1912. Robert enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps on 20th May 1915, while living at 11½ Pioneer Terrace, Bedlington Station., and was sent to France in 1916. An article in the Blyth News of 03/12/1917 details a presentation of gifts to him following the award of the Military Medal for attending to wounded men although wounded himself. An article in the same newspaper of 05/09/1918 quotes a letter to his wife from his C.O. which tells how, when serving with 7 Field Ambulance, his First Aid post received a direct hit and he was killed by the blast.

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 and in Bedlington on B15.06
