Mason, E., Pte., 1916
In Becourt Military Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 21/962 Private Edward Mason, serving with the 21st (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 04/06/1916.

Morpeth Herald 25/08/1916 carries a brief obituary:

Private E[dward] Mason, Bedlington, killed.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Edward was born in Cumberland in 1873 to George and Ruth, and his family all worked in the butchery trade. In 1900 Edward married Sarah Straughan in Workington and became a fireman.

In 1911 they were living at 22, Ravensworth Terrace, Bedlington Station and Edward was a hewer in the coal mine. They had at least five children: Phyllis, Arthur. Elsie. Florrie and Joshua.

He is buried at Becourt Military Cemetery which was near a military hospital. so it is likely he died of wounds suffered at the start of the Battle of the Somme.

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 and in Bedlington on B15.06
