Kinghorn, G., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of 20/819 Private George Kinghorn, serving with the 20th (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 01/07/1916.

Morpeth Herald 20/04/1917 carries a brief obituary:

ROLL OF HONOUR

KINGHORN.- Missing since July 1st, 1916, now presumed dead, Private George Kinghorn, 819, 1st T.S., aged 39 years, dearly beloved husband of Jane Kinghorn, 6½ Pioneer Terrace, Bedlington Station, eldest son of John and Elizabeth Kinghorn, Bank Top.- Deeply mourned by his loving wife and family, father, mother and brothers, father-in-law, brothers and sisters-in-law.

George, elder brother of Thomas, was born in Bedlington in 1878, the eldest child of John and Elizabeth Kinghorn who had moved to Bedlington in search of work. George began work in the pit as a pony driver, but later became a hewer. In 1897 he married Jane Peel and they had three children, Jane, John and Robert. At the time of his enlistment the family was living at 8, Pioneer Terrace, Bedlington. George is known to have served as a stretcher bearer. He died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 and in Bedlington on B15.06
