BEDLINGTON STATION

Jamieson, R., Pte., 1916
In Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 3787 Private Robert Jamieson, serving with the 1st/7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 30/12/1916.

He was the son of William and Jane Jamieson, of Bedlington Colliery.

Morpeth Herald 26/01/1917 carries a brief obituary:

ROLL OF HONOUR

JAMIESON.- Mr William Jamieson, of 79 South Row, Bedlington Colliery, has received official news from the War Office of the death of his son, Private Robert Jamieson. He was killed in action on Dec. 30th, 1916. Previous to enlistment he worked at Bedside Colliery, and was 24 years of age. “He did his duty well”.

Robert, brother of William, was the youngest child of William and Jane Jamieson, and was born in Bedlington in 1892. In 1911 the family was living at 79, South Row, Bedlington and Robert was working in the pit with his father and brothers. Robert was killed in action on 30th December 1916 and was originally buried at the battlefield cemetery of Clark's Dump, but his body was later moved to the larger Caterpillar Valley Cemetery at Longueval.
