BEDLINGTON STATION

Fenwick, C., Cpl., 1916
In Puchevillers British Cemetery, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 16303 Corporal Charles Fenwick, serving with the 6th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, who died 15/09/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Charles, born in Bedlington in 1894 to Charles and Elizabeth Fenwick, was one of the first men to enlist in the town on 26th August 1914. He joined the 6th East Yorkshire Regiment, which became the Pioneer Regiment for the 11th (Northumbrian Division). In June 1915 his Regiment was sent to Gallipoli, where he was promoted to Lance Corporal and then Corporal. The Regiment was withdrawn to Egypt in December 1915, before being sent via Alexandria and Marseilles to join the Battle of the Somme, and by 27th July he was fighting in the front line. He was admitted to a field hospital on 15th September with wounds to his legs and abdomen, and died later that day. The 'Blyth News' of 21st September 1916 records a letter from a nursing sister at the hospital to Charles's parents., then living at 27 South Row, Bedlington Station. He is buried in the British Cemetery at Puchevillers.

He was a scout with the 1st Bedlington Troop.

Morpeth Herald 29/09/1916 carries the following:

ROLL OF HONOUR

[FENWICK].- In loving memory of Corporal C. Fenwick (16303), 6th East Yorks, the beloved son of Charles and Elizabeth Fenwick, of 27 South Row, Bedlington Colliery, who died from wounds, Sept. 15th, 1916, aged 22 years. (Deeply mourned and sadly missed by his loving father and mother, brothers and sister.)

Morpeth Herald 27/10/1916 carries a brief obituary:

Mr and Mrs Charles Fenwick, of Bedlington Station, have been officially notified of the death of their son, Corporal C. Fenwick (16303), East Yorks, who died from wounds received in action in France on Sept. 15th.
