Cram, W., Sjt., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 23/795 Serjeant William Cram, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

William Cram was born in 1884 near Spennymoor in County Durham. His father John was a miner who moved in search of work. William became a miner like his father. By 1900 the family had moved to the Amble area of Northumberland. In 1906 William married Mary Isabella Campbell and they had three children, Alice, Robert and Jane.

William is listed on the Bedlington Coal Company's Roll of Honour so he was definitely living and working in Bedlington when he enlisted. He was one of the many Tyneside Scottish who died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. His body was never found and his is one of the names on the Thiepval Memorial.

Susan Carmichael adds that their children Alice was born in 1909, Robert was born in 1911 and Jane was born in 1915.William Cram is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 and in Bedlington on B15.06
