In Heilly Station Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave for 21/960 Private George Anderton, serving with the 21st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) who died 09/06/1916.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

George Anderton was born at Pegswood, near Morpeth in Northumberland in about 1896. His parents were Thomas Anderton, a coal miner from Wigan, Lancashire and Harriet Anderton who was born at Barrington in Northumberland.

In 1901, aged 5, George was living with his parents at 186, Longhirst Terrace, Pegswood with siblings Harry, 2 and Agnes aged 8 months.

By 1911 his family had moved to 21, Alexandra Terrace, Barrington where George, aged 15, was employed in the coal mines as a pony driver. His siblings were James Edward 8, Marion 3 and Florence aged 4 months.

Military records show he enlisted at Bedlington and died of wounds. CWGC documents show his parents were living at 11, Freehold Row, Barrington Colliery Bedlington after his death. There are no indications George was married.

George Anderton is remembered in Bedlington on B15.06 and in Choppington on C36.01
