On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 20/724 Serjeant Robert Cockburn, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Robert was born in Bedlington in 1894 to James and Elizabeth Cockburn, In 1911 they were living at 105, North Row, Bedlington Station and Philip and his father and brothers were all working in the coal mine.

Robert must have been a good soldier to be promoted to Sergeant so young. He died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 and in Bedlington on B15.06
