On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 11865 Private Joseph Weightman, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (12th Battalion) who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Joseph was born at Dinnington, Northumberland in 1895. His parents were William Weightman from Dinnington and Mary Weightman from Pegswood, Northumberland.

In 1901 Joseph, aged 6, was living with his parents at Mason, Dinnington where his father was a coal miner. Also in the house at this time was his sister Mary Ann who was two years old.

The 1911 Census records Joseph, now 16, living at Craig’s Building, Bedlington Northumberland where he was a colliery driver underground. There were 8 people living in 2 rooms at this address including siblings Mary Ann 13, Ada 7, Richard 4 and Thomas aged 1.

Military records show he went to France on September 9th 1915 and the CWGC documents confirm he was the son of Mrs Mary Weightman of 23, Double Row, Barrington Colliery, Northumberland.

On death his effects went to his mother Mary indicating Joseph was not married.

Joseph Weightman is remembered in Bedlington on B15.06 and in Choppington on C36.01
