Joseph was born 20th November 1896, the ninth of ten children to Joseph and Margaret Pattison. His father was a Deputy Overman at the pit and the family lived at South Row, Bedlington Station. In 1911 Joseph was a surface miner. Joseph joined the Navy but was sent to Howe battalion of the Royal Naval Division. It is not known whether he served in Gallipoli, but he was one of the casualties of the final phase of the Battle of the Somme, and survived his wounds long enough to return to England before he died.

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 and in Bedlington on B15.06
