George Taylor

On the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, is the name of 10802 Private George Taylor, serving with 6th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment who died 09/08/1915.

George is the elder brother of Lewis who also died.

George, one of the eldest of eleven children to John and Margaret Taylor was born in 1892 in Aberdeen, where his parents had been born. John evidently moved in search of work as the younger children were born in Edinburgh, and then in 1911 the family were living at Hollymount, Bedlington and John was working as a boot repairer. George was working as a putter down the pit. George was one of the first men in Bedlington to enlist for he joined 6th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. The Battalion sailed from Avonmouth to Gallipoli on 11th July 1915 and landed at Suvla Bay on 7th August. George died two days later.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.06 and in B15.26 page 5
