On the Tyne Cot Memorial is the name of 40980 Lance Corporal Joseph Swinhoe serving with 2nd Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) who died 16/08/1917.

Joseph was born in 1890 in Horton, the second child to Joseph and Rachel Swinhoe. His father was a miner and in 1891 the family were living in Elliott Street, Horton. By 1901 they had moved to 74, New Row, Cramlington, and in 1911 they were living at 7, 1st Second Street, Netherton Colliery, and Joseph was a hewer like his father. Joseph enlisted in Bedlington and was killed in action at the Battle of Loos. Although serving with the West Yorkshire Regiment at the time of his death, Joseph had previously served as no. 19436 in the Northumberland Fusiliers.

He is remembered in Barrington on B96.02 and in Bedlington on B15.06 and B15.26 page 127
