BEDLINGTON

Gray, J., Pte., 1916
In Millencourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 20/552 Private James Gray, serving with the 20th (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 02/07/1916.

He was the husband of Emma Gray, of 2, Bell’s Place, Bedlington Colliery.

Morpeth Herald 17/11/1916 carries a brief obituary:

ROLL OF HONOUR

Private James Gray, died of wounds, July 2nd. (Ever remembered by his sister Maggie, and children).

Carole Fife has provided the following:

James's military record shows that he enlisted in Bedlington and died of wounds. James was born in Bedlington in 1884 and he became a miner. In 1909 he married Emma Stevens and they had two children, John in 1910 and Henry in 1912. In 1911 James and his family were living in Glebe Row, Bedlington, and the Enlistment Book shows them as later living at the Old Hall, so it would appear that Emma moved to Bell's Place after his death.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.03, B15.06, B15.20 and B15.26 page 15
