Gaffey, G.W., Pte., 1915
On the Helles Memorial is the name of 11358 Private George William Gaffey serving with 6th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment who died 09/08/1915.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

George was born in 1884 at Bedlington Bank Top. His parents were James and Mary Ann Gaffey, and his father was a miner. In 1891 the family were living at East Chevington, and while his father was working down the mine his mother was working on a farm.

By 1901 the family were living at Amble and George had gone to work in the pit alongside his father, but his father died in 1904 and the 1911 census shows George living at Fail's Yard, Vulcan Place, with his mother. George's service with 6th Bn. East Yorkshire Regt, shows that he was one of the first men in Bedlington to enlist, for that was the only regiment recruiting in Bedlington in the early days of the war. He was 31 when he died.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.06 and in B15.26 page 100
